Kalshi Review 2026: Is Kalshi Legit? Fees & Withdrawals

Updated October 14, 2026 · Published-policy review

Yes, Kalshi is a legitimate, CFTC-regulated exchange. The regulator designated KalshiEX as a contract market in 2020. That answers the company-legitimacy question; it does not guarantee that a trade will make money or that every withdrawal will arrive immediately.

This Kalshi review examines the evidence behind its regulatory status, what a trade actually costs, and how you get your money out. Our assessment: Kalshi makes its fees and account rules publicly checkable. Its main complications are market-specific charges, the price available when you sell, and withdrawal eligibility. Those details matter more than a star rating.

We checked official records and current published policies for this update. We did not deposit money, place trades, test withdrawals, or measure support response times.

Is Kalshi legit? What the regulatory record shows

KalshiEX LLC received its designated contract market status from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the U.S. derivatives regulator. The CFTC’s designation announcement identifies the legal entity and the obligations attached to that status. This is independent evidence you can check outside Kalshi’s marketing.

Oversight matters because an exchange has rules to follow and a regulator that can act. It does not establish that Kalshi is the safest platform, insure your trading results, or resolve a particular customer’s complaint. We do not treat registration as proof of those claims.

Three separate questions often get combined under “Is Kalshi safe?”:

  • Is the exchange real and regulated? Yes; the CFTC record supports that.
  • Can a position lose money? Yes. A losing standard yes/no contract settles at $0, so you can lose the amount paid plus fees.
  • Is a particular contract available where you live? Check current eligibility and contract restrictions. Federal registration alone is not an all-states availability list.

Use the official domain, kalshi.com, when checking account information. A social account or message using the Kalshi name is not evidence that the sender represents the exchange.

Kalshi fees: what a $50 position costs

For a standard taker trade with multiplier 1, the fee calculation is 0.07 × contracts × price × (1 − price), subject to Kalshi’s rounding rules. A taker order fills against an existing order. Some markets use different multipliers.

The official fee schedule, effective July 7, 2026, lists a $1.75 fee for 100 contracts bought at 50¢. Here is the arithmetic for that purchase held to a standard $1-or-$0 settlement:

ItemAmount
100 contracts × $0.50$50.00
Trading fee$1.75
Total paid$51.75
If the position wins$100 payout; $48.25 profit before taxes or funding costs
If the position loses$0 payout; $51.75 loss

This is an illustration, not a forecast or a trade recommendation. Selling before settlement produces a different result because the exit price and any selling fee matter.

Kalshi lists no settlement or membership fee and no ACH deposit or withdrawal fee. Card deposits can cost up to 2%; crypto processing can add costs. Resting orders can carry maker fees in designated markets. Check the fee shown with the order rather than assuming all limit orders are free.

Does Kalshi pay out? Withdrawal rules and timing

Kalshi documents withdrawals of available cash to supported payment methods. We verified those policies; we have not independently tested a payout. The useful distinction is between when funds become eligible to withdraw and how long a requested transfer takes.

StageCurrent published rule
Deposit holdFor ACH and debit deposits, withdrawal to the same method is available once the deposit settles. A different method can have a hold of up to two days after settlement.
Bank transfer deliveryTypically a few business days after the withdrawal request.
Debit card deliveryTypically within a few hours, depending on the bank or issuer. Payment-processor compliance reviews can delay availability.

Kalshi’s security-hold policy was updated August 14, 2026. Its bank and debit withdrawal pages were updated August 24, 2026. These are provider estimates, not measured delivery times.

What to check if a withdrawal is unavailable: the account’s withdrawal screen shows when each deposit is released. Money committed to an open position is not withdrawable cash. Kalshi says its deposit holds apply to the original deposited amount; settled earnings beyond that amount can be withdrawn without the deposit hold.

Older versions of this review described a 90-day different-bank hold. The current policy above replaces that description. A delay still deserves investigation; an outdated blanket rule is not a useful explanation for it.

Kalshi pros and cons

What the evidence supports

  • Verifiable regulatory status. You can check the exchange’s identity and designation with the CFTC.
  • Costs you can calculate. Published schedules let you work through a specific trade instead of relying on a headline fee percentage.
  • Several funding options. Kalshi lists bank transfers, cards, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App deposits, crypto and wires, with availability depending on the account and location.

Where the details matter

  • Getting the outcome right is only part of the calculation. The purchase price and charges determine how much of a winning payout remains as profit.
  • Early exits depend on the market. The price someone will pay for your position may be lower than the displayed price you used to judge it.
  • Access to cash has conditions. Deposit settlement, open positions and account reviews can affect withdrawals. Our evidence does not establish a typical support response time.

How Kalshi works: price, payout and settlement

A standard binary contract asks whether a defined event will happen. A winning position pays $1 per contract at settlement; a losing position pays $0. The purchase price is what you pay to take that position, not your eventual profit. The CFTC’s event-contract explanation describes this structure and the associated risks.

A 60¢ price is often read as roughly a 60% market-implied probability. It is a market price, not a verified 60% chance or a promise about the result.

Read the contract’s resolution criteria, named data source and timing. An election winner, an official certification and a person taking office are different events. Likewise, a first economic release and a revised figure can produce different results. The contract wording determines which one matters.

For an early exit, compare the price available to buy with the price available to sell. As a hypothetical example, buying 100 contracts at 52¢ and immediately selling them at 48¢ would lose $4 before fees. That is why a published fee schedule alone cannot establish the total cost of a round trip.

Common questions about Kalshi

Is Kalshi a scam?

The official exchange is a regulated business with a verifiable CFTC designation. That supports its legitimacy. It does not authenticate a lookalike website, unsolicited message, or person claiming to offer guaranteed profits through Kalshi.

Why does Kalshi ask for my ID or Social Security number?

Kalshi verifies account holders’ identities and can request identification and additional documents. Its verification policy explains the documents involved. Its SSN instructions direct existing users to Account & security on the official website. Enter sensitive information through your authenticated account, not a message from an unverified sender.

Is Kalshi legal in my state?

Kalshi’s federal registration is confirmed. Availability of a particular market is a separate question, and this review does not certify every state’s current position. Check the current member agreement, account restrictions and rules for the contract you are considering. Our prediction-market lawsuit tracker provides background on the disputes.

Can you lose more than you put into a contract?

For the fully paid standard yes/no purchase illustrated here, the loss is the purchase cost plus fees. This example does not cover leveraged products or Kalshi’s separate perpetual-futures offering.

What should I make of Reddit, Trustpilot or app-store reviews?

Look for dated accounts that explain the payment method, timing, issue and resolution. A withdrawal complaint can describe a deposit hold, a failed transfer or a support dispute; those are different problems. We have not measured how frequently these occur or independently resolved individual complaints, so we do not turn selected comments into a failure rate.

Does Kalshi provide tax documents?

Kalshi lists forms for interest, credits or rewards, and certain crypto transactions, plus an annual profit-and-loss statement updated monthly. Its tax-documentation page explains what each covers. Keep your transaction records; do not assume one form describes every event-contract result. Our prediction-market tax guide covers the recordkeeping questions to discuss with a tax professional.

Kalshi or another prediction market?

Compare the same contract, purchase amount and exit plan. A lower trading fee can be outweighed by a worse execution price, while different settlement wording can mean you are comparing different outcomes.

Use our Kalshi vs. Polymarket comparison for that pairing, or read the individual Polymarket review and FanDuel Predicts review. The prediction-market platform comparison covers the broader field. Check each guide’s date and the platform’s current terms.

How we reviewed Kalshi

This update checks published evidence: the CFTC designation, Kalshi’s fee schedule, eligibility rules, transfer policies and tax-documentation guidance. The $50 example is our calculation using the published standard fee. The spread example is hypothetical.

We have not completed the funded-account tests needed to score execution, withdrawals or support. Accordingly, this edition gives a written assessment rather than presenting the older 7.4/10 score as a current tested result. Our sitewide methodology describes the broader testing framework; the evidence statement here defines what was actually done for this update.
